Dr. James Sullivan grew up on the South Side of Chicago, then in southwestern Michigan. He received his BA and MD from the University of Michigan, through a six year combined integrated pre medical / medical program. Internal Medicine Residency and Infectious Disease Fellowship were completed at Rush. He pursued an MPH at University of Illinois at Chicago, in epidemiology.He is double board certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.
He was an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago prior to joining Lakeshore Infectious Disease in 1996.He is actively involved in teaching residents and medical students at St Joseph Hospital.This includes staffing an HIV clinic for indigent patients at the Laboure clinic once weekly. He is also on staff at Kindred Lakeshore Hospital, where he is able to continue the care of complex patients not able to be discharged directly home from the acute care hospital.
Dr Sullivan enjoys talking to patients.He will spend the time needed such that a patient understands his illness and the options for treatment, and achieves a sense of control over the treatment chosen. He sees patients in the context of their lives, and helps them address every aspect of combating and coping with a serious infectious disease.
His clinical areas of interest include HIV care, HIV pre exposure prophylaxis, management of Hepatitis B and C, syphilis and other STDs, bacterial infections including MRSA and multi drug resistant infections, c. difficile infections, viral infections, travel medicine, wound care, and infections of bones, joints, prostheses and skin / soft tissue.
Dr. Sullivan and his partner have lived more than 20 years together in Lakeview. They spend time with their large extended local families.
