Dr. Monica Sharma grew up in the Midwest, including the Quad Cities and greater Detroit area. She did her undergraduate education at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI and osteopathic medical school training at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. She went to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL for internal medicine residency training and then Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN for infectious diseases fellowship training. She is double board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases.

Dr. Sharma started practicing in the northwest suburbs of Chicago in 2009 in a small private practice group. She joined Lakeshore Infectious Diseases in 2013 and is on staff at St Joseph Hospital and Kindred of Lakeshore hospital currently. Dr. Sharma is actively involved in the internal medicine residency education program at St Joseph Hospital. She is a member of the clinical competency committee for internal medicine, a committee which meets regularly to assess the proficiency of the internal medicine residents. She is passionate about teaching and is engaged in numerous activities revolved around the residency education program.

Dr. Sharma strongly believes that carefully listening to the patient is necessary when formulating an appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan. Just as she enjoys educating and counseling the internal medicine residents, she likewise enjoys educating and counseling her patients about their clinical disease states.

Dr. Sharma’s areas of interest include HIV care, Lyme disease, travel/ tropical medicine, viruses, sexually transmitted diseases, fungal infections including histoplasmosis and blastomycosis, infectious complications from diabetes, multi-drug resistant infections, and preventive care including HIV PrEP.

In her free time, Dr. Sharma enjoys traveling, running, bicycling, playing tennis and basketball and spending quality time with her three year old son.
