Dr. Toral Patel received her BA degree from Northwestern University and her undergraduate medical education at Ross University School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Henry Ford Health Systems in Detroit and a fellowship in Infectious Disease at Loyola University Medical Center. Dr. Patel joined the medical staff at Presence St. Joseph hospital Chicago in 2009. She is double board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease.
Representing a long line of physicians in her family, Toral Arun Patel was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio where her late father, Arunkumar F. Patel, established his successful psychiatric practice near the Medical University of Ohio. She attended Maumee Valley Country Day School for her entire primary education and graduated in 1996.
She earned her BA at Weinstein school of Liberal Arts at Northwestern University in Illinois where she studied Hispanic Studies: Golden Age Spanish Literature and especially enjoyed hosting a radio program on WNUR 89.3 FM.
Dr. Toral Patel graduated medical school from the Ross University School of Medicine which included formative training at the Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, where she first gained experience managing complicated opportunistic infections associated with HIV/AIDS.
She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. There, she gained much interest in MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and complicated skin and soft tissue infections and decided to pursue further training dedicated to managing infections.
Dr. Toral Patel returned to Illinois to pursue a fellowship in Infectious Diseases from Loyola University Chicago where she trained under Drs. Dale Gerding and Stuart Johnson and had the fortunate experience of working in the Clostridium reference laboratory at the Hines VA.
She joined the medical staff of St Joseph upon completion of her training and was immediately attracted to the unique population of Lakeview where she has gained much experience managing HIV, viral hepatitis, skin and soft tissue infections, complicated bone/joint infections, gram-negative infections, Clostridium infections and other diarrheal illnesses. She is dedicated to infection prevention strategies such as Truvada PrEP, regular STI screening, immunizations and policies related to Infection Control programs. Dr. Patel is now an active participant in a number of administrative committees related to anti-microbial stewardship as well as improving sepsis syndrome outcomes.
Dr. Patel is passionate about diagnosing conditions, targeting therapy and deescalating antibiotics when appropriate. During her free time, she enjoys dining out in Chicago and collecting vinyl records. She cherishes her relationships with her office patients and hopes to stay in Chicago indefinitely.
